What's It All Mean?????
FAGD
A general dentist who is a "fellow"
in the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) has been recognized by other
general dentists as a leader who is committed to quality patient care
through quality continuing dental education. To earn fellowship a
dentist must earn a minimum of 500 continuing dental education credits and
pass a comprehensive 400 - question examination.
MAGD
A general dentist who has earned the
designation "master" of the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD)
has additionally completed a structured and rigorous set of requirements
involving all the dental disciplines. To attain mastership, a
dentist must first have attained fellowship status. They must then
complete an additional 600 approved continuing education credits, meeting
requirements in certain dental disciplines, of which 400 hours are
hands-on courses. Thus, a master of the Academy of General Dentistry
has taken a total of 1,000 hours of continuing education and studied 16
disciplines in dentistry. Dr. Forhan has completed these
requirements and will receive his MAGD in New York summer 2001.
General Practice Residency
A general practice residency is an
optional 5th year of dental education. Such a program is hospital
based and allows a resident to gain experience in both medicine and
dentistry. Residences allow for additional training in sedation and
hospital dentistry.
Conscious Sedation Certificate
The Conscious Sedation Certificate is a
prerequisite to obtaining a Florida Anesthesia Permit. Such a
program involves 60 hours of didactic sedation training and the
performance of 20 hands on cases to demonstrate competency. Since
obtaining this certificate in 1996, doctor Forhan has provided sedation
and/or surgical center general anesthesia for over 500 patients.
